27th Annual Friends of Pisgah Picnic at Visitor Center Barn - 2014-10-04

The 27th Annual Friends of Pisgah Picnic was held Saturday, October 4th in the Visitor Center barn.  At least 26 friends showed up on a drizzly morning.  Grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and sweet corn as well as great food brought by attendees was enjoyed by all.

The morning drizzle turned to steady afternoon rain.  Mums and pumpkins were raffled off after dinner.

We’d like to thank the New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation for allowing us to use the park for our picnic.

Kilburn Bridge Rebuild 2014-08-16

Laura Susmann, Jim Schfield, David Weisel, Krister Raasoch with Harry and Art, John Hudachek, Matt Edson, John Herrick and his John Deere tractor and Pisgah State Park Manager Whip Newell met at 9 am on Saturday, August 16th at the Kilburn Trailhead in Hinsdale. The goal of the day was to rebuild the decking and hand rails on the bridge on the northeast corner of the Kilburn at the end of the Kilburn Road.

First the old stringers were removed and the new stringers set into place.  We replaced the decking and hand rails with new lumber provided by the state that had been already cut and transported close to the bridge.  Gary Montgomery arrived around 1:00 to assist. We were done by 3:00 and back to our vehicles by 4:00.

Later Matt Edson and Gary Montgomery returned with additional lumber
and built the ramps and improved the tops of the hand rails.

Thanks to all for a job well done!

The Friends of Pisgah (FOP) hosted the first FOP Pisgah Park 10/5 kilometer trail race/walk in Pisgah Park on Saturday, May 24, 2014. Gary Montgomery, FOP President mapped the course earlier in the month. Pisgah Council members along with the Chesterfield Emergency Response Team (ERT) and a few other FOP volunteers arrived at a bit after 7:00 a.m. Saturday and got to work setting up registration tables, a food table and tee shirt table. By 8:25 a.m. all was in place for the contestants to arrive, get their race bibs and pick up their tee shirts. Over 80 folks, young and older, were pre-registered and another 60 or so registered on arrival at the Horseshoe Trailhead on a cool, damp and cloudy morning. A total of 138 competitors were ready for the start of the race at the Horseshoe Road Parking Lot. Amazingly, the bugs were not too active by race time though some appeared while participants were running/walking the trails. Around 9:30 a.m. or so, volunteers to man check points in the Park along the course left by ATV to reach their stations. Gary Montgomery marked the start line.

Pisgah Trail Maintenance - 2013-12-14

Matt Edson, John Hudachek and Friends of Pisgah (FOP) trail chief John Herrick met at the Kilburn Trailhead on a cold, December morning at 10:00. With reports of trees down the group decided to hike and clear the Kilburn Loop.

The west side of the Kilburn loop was remarkably clear all the way down to the Kilburn dam.  We then decided to walk across the pond and bushwack to the east side of the Kilburn loop. Numerous trees were found fallen across the trail and were cleared.  Finding many dead birch hanging over the trail waiting to fall, we downed and cleared them from the trail too.  The group returned to the parking lot at 1:45.

No pictures were taken - it was too cold to remove gloves and retrieve a camera.  There was a good chance the camera would not have worked as cold as it was.
